Screen options abound with System 7.6 and greater
Since the first days of the Macintosh, you've been able to capture a PICT file of the screen by pressing the [command][shift]3 key combination. With the introduction of System 7.6, Apple included the following additional options for capturing portions of the Mac's screen: [command][shift][control]3 creates a copy of the entire desktop to the Clipboard. [command][shift]4 allows you to select what portion of the screen the Mac creates a PICT file for. Once you press the keyboard combination, drag the insertion point from one corner of your selection to the far corner and then release the mouse button. [command][shift][caps lock]4 creates a PICT file of your window selection. Once you press the key combination, click on the window you wish to select. To cancel any of the options that include the [shift]4 key combination before creating a file, simply press the [spacebar]. If you'd like to store any of the options to the Clipboard instead of a file, hold down the [control] key as you click the mouse button. The system software stores all the image files you create in the root directory (the drive where your System Folder resides).
