Stopping startup items

Here's a simple way to control whether or not your startup items load. First, create a new folder, and name it A. Next, make an alias of that folder and place it in the Startup Items folder. Finally, delete the original folder. When you restart your Mac, you'll get a dialog box saying that the alias' original item couldn't be found. The Mac will now let you choose whether to continue or stop loading the startup items.
