Balloon Help on the Mac

When you choose About This Computer from the Finder's Apple menu, you'll see a bar displaying the amount of memory currently allotted to each open application. The shaded portion of that bar indicates how much memory the application is currently using. For a more detailed accounting of this number, choose Show Balloons from the Help menu to turn on Balloon Help, then point to one of those bars. The balloon's bottom paragraph tells you how much memory the application is using in kilobytes. If this number is consistently lower than the memory allotted, you can use it as a guideline for lowering the amount of memory you've given that program. For the most accurate reading, check About This Computer after you've been running the application for a while.
