Booting into Dos

If you need to start your PC in DOS mode instead of Windows 95 Maybe you need DOS for a particular game you're about to run, and don't like the restrictions of DOS within Windows.  To boot into a full version of Dos do the following.

  1. Within Windows, click on Start and then on Run.
  2. Type notepad and then press Enter.
  3. In the Notepad, use File + Open to get the msdos.sys file.
  4. In the msdos.sys file, find the BootGUI=1 line.
  5. Change that line to BootGUI=0.
  6. Use the File + Save command, and then Exit the Notepad.

The next time you start your computer, it will come up in DOS. Then if you want to start Windows you'll need to change to the Windows directory and type win. This then means that your PC boots to Dos first, but gives you the option to go to Windows.
