Winfile Usage Warnings

Users of Windows 3.1 will remmeber the infamous Windows File Manager, Did you know that you can use this in Windows 95 and 98.  To run File Manager, go to the start, run and type winfile, click on ok and the Windows File Manager will start, does it bring back memories If you use the File Manager there are a few things to keep in mind .

First, File Manager does not recognize long filenames. When you use it to view a file that has a name longer than eight characters, the name will appear truncated (six characters plus a tilde ~ and then a number, as in "mydocu~1.doc"). And if you use File Manager to copy or move that file, the file will lose its long name altogether (replaced with the truncated name).

Second, File Manager does not send deleted files to the Recycle Bin (although it does ask you to confirm your deletion). Therefore, a file deleted using File Manager has been deleted for good.
