Opening Unknown Files in Windows NT Is there an easy way to tell Windows NT 4.0 Workstation to open all these unknown Readme type files in Notepad? You can right-click an unknown file and choose Open With. Then, when the Open With dialog box appears, select Notepad and make sure you select the check box labeled Always Use This Program To Open This File. If the file extension is XXX, then all other files with that extension will open in Notepad. You could also edit the Registry to make all unknown file types open in Notepad. We decided to make the job easier for you and generate a REG file. To create the REG file, run Notepad and enter the following as shown here. Where you see BLANK LINE GOES HERE, press Enter to enter a blank line. REGEDIT4 BLANK LINE GOES HERE [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\Open\Command] @="notepad.exe %1" BLANK LINE GOES HEREChoose File, Save As and name the new file Note.reg. Locate a folder for the file and click Save to close the Save As dialog box and save your file. Double-click the Note.reg icon to add the file's contents to your Registry. When you restart the computer (or log off and on), your changes will take effect. Note that not all files will open in Notepad. Don't worry too much about this--you'll get an error message in most cases. If a file opens and displays only gibberish, it's probably a binary file. If you don't make any changes to the file and choose File, Exit right away, this won't do any harm.
